What is the WILD Community?

At the heart of WILD is community, because we believe that connection can change lives.

We are working tirelessly to build a safe, supportive, and inspirational space both on and offline for anyone and everyone to get involved with. We offer monthly WILD Walks as a chance to connect on the ground, projects to get involved with, and our online Patreon platform where people from all over the globe come together.

We set up a Patreon page to help support the growth and diversification of WILD, whilst offering a community space for those who want to get more conneced and empowered.
Below you can venture through some of our members, what inspires them and why they've decided to be a member of the Patron tribe.

Becoming a Patron offers you anything from being featured on this "hall of fame" to receiving handwritten postcards; accessing our incredibly supportive private Facebook-Group; joining exclusive events and gatherings; to having personal, 1-on-1 Skype sessions with Abbie.

Check out the website to find out more about the different memberships and benefits to start supporting the project in whichever way you like.

As an artist I spend a lot of time living in the worlds that exist inside my head, sometimes even to my own detriment, and (over the past year) Staying Wild has been the driving force (or maybe I should say, benign kick-in-the-behind) which I needed to once again go on adventures and rediscover the beautiful (natural) world existing outside my studio. So, I thank you for the inspiration, and keep up the good work.

I love taking daily walks with my Golden Retriever and going on 8 to 10 mile walks with friends - mostly in Northumberland and Yorkshire. I've done a lot of fell-walking in the Lake District, and have a huge appreciation of our beautiful countryside.

6 months ago I came across a Lake District day walk film made by Abbie Barnes which made me realise I hadn't been near a fell for 2 years, in fact I had stopped participating in all the outdoor activities I enjoyed. My work/life balance had become unbalanced, mental health issues can take many forms, I was never in a dark place, but I did have an illness and it's thanks to Spend More Time In The Wild, Abbie and everyone who supports the project that I was able to recognize I needed help.

My Happy hiking place is Lech in Austria, the Seven sisters in Sussex and my everyday stomps on Hampstead Heath with my dog. Abbie, your smile lights up the screen and your honesty, integrity and determination to see the light at the end of the tunnel is inspirational.  I suffer from self doubt and low self esteem but on every walk, nature is the best friend who gives me a hug.

The mountains are where I go to breathe. Having had mental health issues my entire life, I discovered that all I needed to do to feel truly calm and in control was to put on a pair of boots and hike like my life depended on it. Thank you Abbie for your inspiration and passion in this project.

Proud as punch to support the amazing work you do Abbie! As a park ranger I live and breath the ethos of Spend more time in the wild. I can't thank enough people like Abbie and her Patreons for what they all do to support our parks and natural places. Our health, in all its forms, depends on the health of our amazing, beautiful and mind blowing natural world. If we all Spend More Time In The WILD and encourage others to do so just imagine the world we can create.

Enjoying time in the Australian WILD is where I am happiest! Mental health has been a struggle but when I'm in nature, all cares, troubles and anxieties fade into the abundant leaf litter! I live in the Tweed Valley. Lamington National Park and its magnificent escarpment surrounds my home. My life is a blessing and having Abbie and all of you in it is a wonderful gift.

"I feel like a different man when I'm out in the wild, everything seems to slow down and I never seem to be bothered about waiting for the kettle to boil. I have had some of the best laughs and conversations with my Son when we have been out camping or walking together. When my Son's not around I'll take my four legged little Buddy Mazikeen, Maze for short, I have great conversations with her too, but they tend to be one sided Haha! Having suffered all my life with mental illness I have learned to recognise the signs when I need to get out in the wild, but it has been a difficult journey. To anyone reading this please take Abbie's example and spend more time in the wild it really helps I can vouch for that."

Since I started watching Abbies vlogs it gave me the courage and mental ability to hike in the mountains on my own, and for you Abbie I will be eternally grateful! I dont think I would of been able to overcome my fears without watching your vlogs! So thank you! So happy to be apart of the team now!

"I have been a "traditional" camper and day walker for many years.  However, having discovered Abbie's videos on YouTube recently I have been inspired to take to the trail, which opens up a whole new opportunity to engage with the natural wonders that are all around us.  I think this project is a fantastic way of bringing people together, of encouraging a greater awareness of all that our surroundings have to offer and of promoting better mental and physical health.  As someone with mental health issues, I have always found that immersing myself in the countryside around us is better than any medicine - I look forward to getting WILD!!"

Being outdoors means everything to me.  I have been walking my entire life since I first went on a geography field trip to the Lake District aged 16.  I'm 65 now and haven't lost my passion and enthusiasm.  I've become a bit of a walking evangelist and encourage people to get out and enjoy it;  it has sustained me in the best and worst of times and especially now during the pandemic.  Physically and mentally I always feel better walking.  Stay Wild indeed!

Staying WILD is the feeling of happiness and freedom, the vibes of endless possibility, and the eons of wisdom that nature imparts as we travel along the trail through geologic time.

To work as a family to tackle the challenges, enjoy the successes, and really appreciate this beautiful world- all that still inspires us today.  We thank you for your thoughtful and uplifting trail videos. We can hardly wait for our next adventure.

I'm a disabled hiker, artist and lover of the Great Outdoors. Nature is where I find comfort, calm and inspiration. The beauty of your filmmaking Abbie, your ace storytelling and the honesty with which you talk about the things that make life difficult has inspired me to tentatively begin making films myself - which is contributing to giving me back a voice through life dealing with brain injury. I'm proud to contribute in a very tiny way to your wonderful work!

Discovering new sights, sounds and nature has added immeasurably to my life and mental well-being. I especially love snow shoeing in fresh snow, nothing makes my smile wider.

Nature heals. My family’s response to trouble has always been to retreat to wild places. When I was 9, my parents took us all out of school in April in response to one of my older siblings drug use. That was back in 1975; to this day it is the single most impactful shared experience as a family – The Big Trip. As a child I didn’t appreciate the risk my parents were taking but now I do and there is no clearer demonstration of their priorities – our health, our mental health, and our relationships with each other. On April 16, 2007 I was teaching on the Blacksburg, VA campus at Virginia Tech when a shooter killed 32 of my students, staff and colleagues. The only place I could find calm was up on the Appalachian mountain ridges. I often hike alone, but from time to time I welcome sharing these experiences with my students who don’t consider themselves “outdoorsy”.  My husband and I discovered Spend More Time in the Wild and Abbie Barnes during COVID as we were daydreaming about future travels. The West Highland Way caught our eye because of our 18 year old Westie, Princess Fiona Clan McIntyre of the Green Valley. We greatly appreciate her message and the way she shares her walks and thoughts along the way.

I am a photographer, filmmaker, and hiker from Pennsylvania, USA. I've always felt at peace and in awe being in the outdoors, specifically in the mountains. Hiking is a huge part of my life and benefit for my mental health. Thank you for having me here :)

Darren Brown

There have been days where Abbie has inspired me to get outside and to challenge my own anxiety and mental health struggles. I always feel better for having been on a hike, however challenging it may have been whilst I was doing it. Being in nature calms my mind and re focuses me. I’m blessed to live in beautiful Devon, which has limitless possibilities for adventure!
I feel what Abbie is creating is a genuinely caring and supportive community. I feel I want to give back to her what she’s given to me, when I’ve had bad days with my mental health her words have inspired me to challenge myself. Stay wild!

I'm learning that not knowing what lies around the next turn in the path is part of the adventure, and that every day I walk a little further away from fear and a little closer to perfect love. Sometimes I slip and end up in a heap on the ground, but that's okay. Tomorrow is another day!

Staying WILD to me means getting out into the countryside as it makes me feel alive and lifts my mood especially when I can take my dogs with me.

I’ve always had an affinity with the outddors, but as I’ve got older I have learnt how vital it is to my mood, my perspective, my creativity…Abbie’s enthusiasm is infectious and I’ve been massivley inspired by Spend More time in the WILD to get out there and explore!

I discovered the Wild videos in lockdown and although I have always loved walking and the outdoors watching the videos gave me the extra motivation to turn walking from just a weekend hobby to incorporating it into my daily routine not only for physical health but also my mental health.

Mountain climbing was always something other people did - until Abbie's videos gave me the confidence to try it for myself. Thanks to her infectious enthusiasm I've finally found an outdoor activity I enjoy doing. For me, getting outdoors, setting challenges for yourself - and overcoming them - is a sure way of increasing your resilience and happiness.

"Staying wild to me means choosing life, choosing to breath clean air and choosing to get my body as healthy as it can be. It’s about no longer having the weight of the world on my shoulders but instead having under my feet where I can see it. It’s about accepting help and learning to be ok alone."
