About The Event

Walk description:

Join us on our walk up The Cheviot, the highest point in Northumberland National Park!

The Cheviot is a remote hill that is actually an extinct volcano! The route can be very boggy, so come prepared for wet ground. On a clear day you can see as far as the Lake District and even, some claim, Edinburgh. A millstone slabbed pathway on the summit is part of the long-distance route, the Pennine Way, on its last few miles.

We will be hiring a mountain leader to see us safely up the mountain, but we must stress that you are fully responsible for ensuring you are mountain fit and fully kitted out to take on whatever the mountain may throw at us.

This walk will be taking place as part of Abbie Bikes Britain project where Abbie will be biking the length and breadth of the country and climbing the highest point of each National Park to raise awareness about mental health and environmental conservation. #4minds4planet

Places are very limted for our walks so do book on as soon as you can!

Walk length: 8 miles

Date and time: Friday 10th September 2021 at 7:30am (walk start time 8am)

Start/finish location: Car park east of Langleeford, Harthope Valley, Northumberland

Getting to  car park:

Getting to the starting point at Langleeford is something of an adventure in itself due to the remote nature of the valley. The most assured car route is via Wooler.

To get there via Wooler, take the first left into the town (assuming travelling north on the A697) and turn left on to Cheviot Street by the Anchor pub. After that, just follow the signs for Langleeford. A long, single track, dead end road eventually takes you into the valley. Keep going, until you reach a white railed bridge. There is a notice warning you that there is no parking further on. Just before the bridge, are various places where you can park (free).

GoogleMaps can help with access.

Toilet stops: None.

By signing up for a walk with us you are giving us permission to take photos for promotional use across our website and social media pages. We will also have a production team with us for the ascent, and you will likely be asked to present a short piece to Abbie for the camera about why you have decided to join us for the day.  If you specifically do not want media taken with you in it, we do not recommend you join this or any other Abbie Bikes Britain walk.

We encourage you to take photos and videos during your time with us but ask you to be sensitive to other members when sharing these across social platforms. Also, we'd love to have a copy of any you are particularly proud of so we share them too!

Accidents and Incidents:

Abbie and our hired Mountain Leader are qualified first aiders and will carry an appropriate first aid kit. Should you be involved in an accident or

become injured during the walk it is important that you notify us as soon as possible so that appropriate action can be taken. Should you feel unwell or require first aid please let us know. Please use the booking form and the paper disclaimer you will be given on the day as an opportunity to raise anything you feel the walk leader should know about.

Due to the nature of walking in an outdoor area there is often a level of risk. You will need to take responsibility for your own actions, health and involvement during the walk and will be expected to exercise judgement based on your fitness levels as to whether you can complete the walk. Any queries please get in touch. You will also be expected to abide by any safety instructions and decisions made by us and have a duty to exercise judgement regarding your own personal safety and that of other members of the group. If you choose to ignore safety instructions we cannot be held responsible for the consequences.

Cars are left at the owner's own risk.

The weather can play a major role in our enjoyment of a day's walking, and in some cases can present a real danger. We always review the weather forecast in detail the day before and will send you an email if we have to change any plans. This is however only likely if we feel heading out will put us at real risk. Please check the forecast for yourself and come prepared for whatever the weather! You should come fully kitted out for a full day's hike in the mountain.

Please note that the walks are weather dependent. Should the forecast present any danger, we will endeavour to review our plans but cannot offer an alternative route due to the nature of Abbie Bikes Britain.

Food and Drink:

We will not be providing any food or drink on this walk except emergency rations. Please ensure you have adequate food and drink for the day. If you have any questions or need any help/advice with what food to bring, please feel able to get in touch.
