About The Event

Walk Description:

Beginning at Cliff Street car park in Cheddar we will head along the main street past bustling store fronts and cafes to pick up our footpath heading north west. This path is likely to feel like a bit of a shock as it heads steeply  almost 200 metres upwards with very little warning, passing Lion Rock along the way. This path is also often muddy and slippery in the winter months, hence why we are going up it and not down! Please be prepared for this ascent with sticks and good footwear.

Having survived this initiation to our route, things thankfully mellow out as we leave the West Mendip Way in favour of a smaller path heading north east across farmland to the Gruffy Nature Reserve and a small lane below Beacon Batch. Naturally though, we want to hit the high point, and so soon cut back onto a footpath taking us to the trig point at 325m above sea level. Here’s hoping for a clear weather day so that we can enjoy the phenomenal views over the surrounding Somerset landscape.

With a fair amount of ascent now behind us, we will drop down via the eastern slopes of Black Down and travel through an ancient land dotted with tumuli and rock formations nestled between trees. Then the hard work begins again, leading us up into ancient woodland and along the cliff edge of Cheddar Gorge itself.

The final leg of our hike will take us down Jacob's Ladder, a notorious set of stairs, and back into Cheddar Village itself.

Places are always limited on our walks, so do book on as soon as you can! A minimum of 5 people are required for this walk to go ahead. We will be in touch 2 weeks before the start date if we need to rearrange. Please note - this has not yet ever  had to happen!
